베이징(北京) 2024년 12월 18일 /PRNewswire=연합뉴스/ -- 재래식 굴착 공법과 달리 폭약을 사용하지 않고 회전 커터로 터널 전단면의 암석 등을 절삭 또는 굴착하는 터널 보링기(tunnel boring machine•TBM)는 200여 년 전에 터널 공학 용도로 발명됐다. 지난 세기 동안 TBM은 전 세계 여러 나라에서 다양한 대형 터널을 건설하는 데 널리 사용됐다. 11대의 터널 보링기가 투입되어 1994년 개통된 영국과 프랑스를 연결짓는 채널 터널(The Channel Tunnel)이 가장 대표적인 사례다. 이 초대형 프로젝트 덕분에 터널 보링기는 하룻밤 사이에 유명해졌다.
